Arctic Cycles started when winter cycling was almost unheard of. In 1996, to fill the ever growing demand of cyclists in Anchorage, Billy Koitzsch started Arctic Cycles out of his home in Anchorage. He mainly did bike repairs & tune ups. In the winter, he would cross over to adventure cycling, bike rental and guiding for the Iditasport Race. In those early years, his rental bikes were equipped with Snow Cat Rims. They were a two inch wide rim that would fit in most modern day mountain bikes. The rim helped the rider’s performance in harsh snow conditions. “Fat Bikes” grew out of necessity because of the Iditasport. This Alaskan race helped push competitors to think outside the box and find a better way to ride bikes in harsh winter conditions. The winter bikes evolved from Snow Cats to welding rims together and stitching two tires together. The evolution continued as tinkerers built their four and six wheel and tire concepts right up to the modern day fat bike we have today.
Arctic Cycles is owned and operated by the husband/wife team: Billy & Erica Koitzsch. Billy has almost 20 years of experience guiding and biking in the great state of Alaska. Arctic Cycles understands and appreciates the great Alaskan outdoors. They love biking, and everything Alaska has to offer, and they want to share that knowledge and enjoyment with others.
